The nightmares were very, very bad this morning, and they've left me feeling blindfolded and turned about, uncertain if I'm moving forwards or backwards. And though I slept almost eight hours, I feel like I hardly slept five; what I wouldn't give for eight hours of perfect, dreamless sleep.

I think that the worst sort of writing day isn't the sort wherein I sit and stare at the iBook all day, but the words never come. That's bad, yes. But what I think is even worse are the days when the words do come, but at the end of the day, or first thing next day, I'm forced to admit that what seemed like a productive day was, in fact, a dead end. I don't have this happen to me often. But it's happened twice in the last five days. First, there was Wednesday, when I did 1,821 words on what I'd hoped would be a Sirenia Digest vignette called "The Path of Silence," only to discover on Thursday that it was actually the beginning of a long sf story and therefore no use to me at the present time. Then, yesterday, I did 1,884 words, once again on what I'd hoped would be a SD vignette. I was still writing on it at eleven last night, when, suddenly, it became obvious to me it was leading nowhere at all. Looking at it again this morning, I draw the same conclusion. I can't afford days like this. Not right now. There's too much to do, and I'm behind on three separate projects. So, yes, more frustration than anything else.

And, on top of that, I've had to write Anita and tell her that her afterword just doesn't seem quite right for Alabaster. More frustration. So, I'm writing a brief preface for the book, and "On the Road to Jefferson" will be reprinted as an afterword/epilogue sort of thing.

Spooky and I made a pizza for dinner. Then, I played an hour or so of SimEarth, while she had fun exploring J. K. Rowling's website. Mostly, it just made me realize how badly my own site needs a complete overhaul. I'm tempted to take it down until there's time to revamp the whole frelling thing. Anyway, we were up too late reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Most of the stuff that was left out of the movie hasn't bothered me. But I do think they should have worked in the stuff about Sirius Black. I wasn't sure until we got to the scene where Harry, Ron, and Hermione meet him in the cave with Buckbeak, which we read last night. Spooky also finished the cozy for letter Z of Frog Toes and Tentacles yesterday. The auction will begin tomorrow.

I'm very pleased to see that the NASA Stardust return capsule made it back to Earth in one piece after its close encounter with Comet Wild 2. It landed in Utah at 6:10 a.m. (Caitlín Standard Time) with its load of interstellar and cometary dust. Wonders await.

And speaking of things from other worlds, I seem to be having a severe bout of Nar'eth withdrawal. A couple of days ago, I took the big container with all her clothes and holster and stuff out from beneath the bed and just looked at everything. Hopefully, sometime this year, the opportunity to remove all this icky pink makeup will present itself. I miss her. Sigh.

Okay. Time to write. I hope to get through my Alabaster preface today and, with luck, begin a vignette. Hopefully, for a change, I will write words that I can actually use.
