Continuing my research on Dogtown Commons, a Cape Ann, MA ghost town which figures prominently in Daughter of Hounds. I was especially taken with this photo:

My head is so filled with Dogtown, with feral beasts, cosmic misdirections, angry old women with terrible secrets and desires, the "past" and the present, crumbling cellar walls...

Now I've got a mind full of wicked designs
I've got a non-stop hole in my head—imagination
I'm in a building that has two thousand floors, and when they all fall down
I think you know it's you they're fallin' for
I can't forget I am a sole architect
I built the shadows here
I built the growlin' voice I fear
You add it up, but to do better than that
You've got to follow me...

And so forth.

Well, they're not mine, of course.

Well, bloody fuck, break my heart! I was hoping those were yours.

Sorry. They're Poe's, from "Hey Pretty" on Haunted.

I wish they were mine.

While I number you and one other as my favorite living authors, House of Leaves got into my head (and, I think, into my veins) as no other book has, before or since. Johnny is still a figure in my nightmares. Haunted has been almost consistently on heavy rotation since it came out, and that is my favorite song.

Has anyone pointed you to Dionaea House (http://www.dionaea-house.com/)?

Nope. I was entirely unaware of it. Thanks. It looks very interesting.

I maintain that House of Leaves is the single most important work of dark fantasy from the last ten years.

It's an assertion I can get behind, really.

As someone who has been reading "scary" books since about the age of 10, House of Leaves remains the one novel that has kept me up at night after I finished reading, and still occasionaly gives me nightmares to this day.

This is, of course, a good thing.

Excited about DOH

I recently finished reading (and loving) The Dry Salvages, and I can't wait for Daughter of Hounds. My boyfriend and I listen to Poe's Haunted together, and get all emotional over the stuff about her father.
I LOVE that picture you posted. There's a big headstone in a local cemetery that just says "STRANGE."
