Tomorrow at 1 p.m. EST (10 a.m. PST) the Rift Headstart will begin, for those who have pre-ordered the game. That's a six-day head start before the official release date. Thanks to one of our kindly benefactors, we'll be taking part in the Headstart. Well, Spooky will, as I won't have a PC for a while yet. It looks like we'll both be rolling characters on the Shadefallen server, which, from talk on the forums, looks like it will be the unofficial "no drama" RP server. Please feel free to join us. We'll both be playing Kelari and Bahmi of the Defiant side. It looks like we have an actual chance at RP here. People are serious about it. Spooky and I will be looking for a good RP guild; they're already forming.

And having played a character to Level Eight during the last beta event, I can attest to the fact that the gameplay graphics are almost as amazing as the following trailer:

I'll be on WoW for another few weeks, but then I'm canceling my account (after three years and five months). I don't hope this is the end of WoW. I hope this is a wake-up call that will tell Blizzard it's time to get their shit together.

PLUS! Awesome restrictions on player names, the sort of thing I've been wishing WoW would institute for ages. I quote from Trion's ToS:

"A. Rules Related to Usernames and Guild Designations

Each user will either select a character name or allow the Service to automatically select a character name at random. Additionally, users may form "guilds" and such guilds will be required to choose a name for the guild. When you choose a character name, create a guild, or otherwise create a label that can be seen by other players using the Game or the Service, you must abide by the following guidelines as well as the rules of common decency. If Trion finds such a label to be offensive or improper, it may, in its sole and absolute discretion, change the name, remove the label, and/or suspend or terminate your use of the Service. In particular, you may not use any name:

1. Belonging to another person with the intent to impersonate that person, including without limitation a "Game Master" or any other employee or agent of Trion;
2. That incorporates vulgar language or which are otherwise offensive, defamatory, obscene, hateful, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable;
3. Subject to the rights of any other person or entity without written authorization from that person or entity;
4. That belongs to a popular culture figure, celebrity, or media personality;
5. That is, contains, or is substantially similar to a trademark or service mark, whether registered or not;
6. Belonging to any religious figure or deity;
7. Taken from Trion's Game(s);
8. Related to drugs, sex, alcohol, or criminal activity;
9. Comprised of partial or complete sentence (e.g., "Getpwned", "Luvtodance", etc);
10. Comprised of gibberish (e.g., "Qwerty", "Asdfasdf", "Xyzpdq");
11. Referring to pop culture icons or personas (e.g. "McLovin", "Kyle Broflovski", "Catwoman");
12. That utilizes "Leet" or "Dudespeak" (e.g., "Roflmao", "Roxxurboxx", "Lolzumad"); or
13. That incorporates titles. For purposes of this subsection, "titles" shall include without limitation 'rank' titles (e.g., "General Chow," or “Captain Kangaroo”), monarchist or fantasy titles (e.g., "KingLoko", "LordPauleyC"), and religious titles (e.g., "ThePope," or "Reverend Run").

You may not use a misspelling or an alternative spelling to circumvent the name restrictions listed above, nor can you have a "first" and "last" name that, when combined, violate the above name restrictions. Utilizing any name option to harass or disrupt another individual, group or guild will result in disciplinary action taken with respect to the offending account(s) and may result in character deletion. Accounts which have characters deleted due to a violation of this policy are not eligible for reimbursement privileges."

Holy CRAP! I didn't realize there'd be tentacles and elemental monsters in Rift! OK, I'm in. I'll join your warband or whatever it's called once I'm accustomed to the world. But be warned: I WILL make deals with daemons!

I simply had to get the collector's edition so I could get the Deep One pet. I shall name him/her Whateley!

That and this:

OK, I've decided on Erzsebet (Kelari) and Kauket (Bahmi), Shadefallen shard.

Since you and Spooky are looking for a guild to join, does that mean you won't be making one of your own?

Also, I'll still be playing WoW since I have friends who do. What do you see happening with Eyes of Sylvanas? Transfer of leadership or disband?

Very good.

I've been considering this. I am completely willing to transfer ownership, especially if it's to someone who wants to see the guild grow.

The naming policy looks like a cookie cutter copy of Blizzard's and for that matter most MMO naming policies. Hopefully Trion will do a better job of policing than Blizzard does, but only time will tell. With luck most of the jerks that are ruining wow will stay there instead of migrating to a new game. I'm getting tired of Blizz making changes that appear to be justified as you are playing your character wrong.

They're taking a zero tolerance policy, relying heavily on players to report violations, and they'll be GMs. The last time i saw a GM in WoW was 2008.

Blizzard completely erased the ability to hybridize your talents, and truncated the talent tree to such a degree that it's virtually meaningless.
The ability to hybridize your talents in Rift was one of the first things that attracted me, aside from the overall look. You should check out the various classes and abilities. I only played up to level 21 on my cleric during the beta, but had a couple of days to mess around with switching out my talent builds.
Frankly, I think Rift might be too complex for some of the idiots that are making WoW almost intolerable, at times. And it doesn't have poop jokes or smack you over the head with pop culture references left and right.

What she said.

I think reading the (very active) Rift forums gives a very good idea of how players intend to help keep this game from devolving into another WoW.

I cannot wait until the game goes live! I just have to decide on a server -- seems like a lot of people I know from WoW are switching over to Rift. But they want to play Guardian... *grumble* I'm Defiant all the way.

And I really hope they enforce the name rules. I got so tired of seeing variations of "Ipwnnoobs" etc.

My thoughts exactly. I'll likely make a character to play with them (*sigh..* dwarf it is then!) and then find a nice home for my Defiant character if I can. Finding a good server is the hardest thing for me.

We'll be on Shardfallen, where most of the serious, no-drama rpers are going.

I may make a character there -- if I can get in as it seems every server is now full. :-D If you make a guild would it be open to people who are inexperienced with RP?

Even if they say full, if you're willing to wait, you can still get into those servers. It just takes a while.

And yes, we'll take non-experienced rpers, so long as they're willing to learn.

I don't think the gamer in the family has looked into that one. So far he is quietly playing Wow and DC online though he has dropped his annual subscriptions. If he gets to keep his job after the education cuts maybe I will steer him towards Rift though I'm not sure I'm up to researching names for him so he doesn't violate the T and C.

I'm going to have this waitint for me at home when I get off work. Its going to be both a great day...and impossible to concentrate.

I'm anxious to see how well a "no drama" RP server goes. Hope to see everyone there!
