Got the news of Frank Frazetta's death early today. Very few illustrators had as much of a formative influence on me as a fantasist. In the latter half of the seventies, I was obsessed with Edgar Rice Burroughs, when Ace and Ballentine were re-releasing all his books, many with gorgeous Frazetta covers. These paintings helped teach me how to see others worlds. They were passports. There are a few of my favorites behind the cut:

I have a vivid memory of the paperbacks on the shelf of the Mars series, with all those colorful worlds.

My father had lithographs of many of his prints all around our home when I was growing up.

Sad day.

Yes...

These are lovely. I wrote a poem for Frazetta today.

To be honest, I never gave him much of a chance. I will now. Thanks for linking these.

Oddly, nobody's talking much about his superb comics work, and its huge influence on the Studio artists like Bernie Wrightson. Wrightson is brilliant, but look at his early stuff and it's about one-third Jack Davis, one-third Graham Ingles and one-third Frazetta. I also see a lot of Frazetta's painting style in fellow Studio artist Jeff Jones.

Yes indeed, FF's work for Creepy, Eerie and mmm, Vampirella defined brilliant.

I adore Bernie Wrightson. He's a "looser" FF, if that makes any sense. More fluid, more, erm, tormented.

Yep.

Amazing work; goes without saying.

Might be time for a vignette directly influenced by Frazetta.

Another idol gone. Raising my glass to FF. He's romping alongside Conan with sword a blazing.

A lot of the reading material from my misspent (wellspent?) youth was Frazetta wrapped. Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, Burroughs, Howard...the list goes on and on. R.I.P. Frank Frazetta.

I remember that last one well: OMNI used that as the illustration for the first publication of Robert Silverberg's "Our Lady of the Sauropods". Nearly thirty years later, I still know that story nearly by heart, as outdated as it may be today.

I love his work. His covers are the reason I first picked up the Conan books when I was a kid. There's something about his art that launches me straight into my imagination. It's like a portal to my subconsious.

I loved that he even did album covers for the likes of Molly Hatchet and Nazereth. Just crazy good stuff.

I can't help but remember how he had a series of strokes and lost use of his right hand (his painting hand) and yet had the willpower and skill to teach himself to paint with his off-hand.

He was a talented man and one who has left a lasting imprint on the world.
