Scary stuff for a Thursday morning. "An unprecedented extreme in the northern hemisphere atmospheric circulation has driven a strong direct connecting current between the Gulf Stream and the West Greenland current."

---

This is me writing about not writing. Four days after I "typed" the title page for The Wolf Who Cried Girl, I've still not found my way into the beginning. I cannot even figure out if there should be a prologue or not. I suspect not, though omitting one, in this instance, creates a cascade of structural problems within the novel.

Still a great deal of ice and snow here in Providence.

I'm not sleeping well, though I am, at least, sleeping.

I'm back to that place where I'd rather be anyone but me. Withdrawal into alternate lifelines and avatars. Not into easier lives, or personalities, mind you; a withdrawal into those not so choked by this particular monotony.

The Audible.com contracts were located at the offices of the Audible.com editors. I think that's what I have to show for good news for this week thus far. And I cling to splinters these days.

Swings through the tunnels,
And claws his way.
Is small life so manic?
Are these really the days?
(David Bowie, "A Small Plot of Land")

'I'm back to that place where I'd rather be anyone but me. Withdrawal into alternate lifelines and avatars.'

At least you're not as bad off as some of these people:

http://www.avatar-forums.com/showthread.php?t=43

Reads like a support group for people who saw Avatar and are depressed because they can't actually be Na'vi and live on beautiful, peaceful Pandora ... where a Hammerhead Titanothere would stomp them into thin jelly within six seconds.

Some in the forum recommend, 'Just see the movie again and again!', which may account for some of the repeat business: wannabe Na'vi weeping into their Twizzlers bags over an unattainable Shangri-La.

Well, obviously I wasn't referencing Cameron's film. But, this is a very curious and, I think, telling phenomenon.

Some of the comments make sense: try to be more as one with nature, etc. That's closer to the message Cameron wants us to take away. Some of them, though, sound like suitable cases for treatment.

I wonder if other world-building/immersive films, like Lord of the Rings, have provoked this sort of response and we've just heard about this because Avatar is so huge.

What amuses me most is that these fantasists blithely forget or ignore the many considerable hazards on Pandora, which Cameron establishes right off the bat.

Or maybe you just haven't suffered enough at the hands of cons and fandom. Seriously, I don't think it's unique. I do wonder if there's not a new intensity, though.

Indeed.

So dark the cons of fans.

I'm wondering whether you might not want to visit someone if you have the time or opportunity and if Queen Agoraphobia lets you out of the house. Just to break out of the monotony... . I've been stuck at my mom's place for just over a month now and the monotony is actually wearing me out and zapping my energy worse than the months before when I was stresses as fuck and didn't see myself graduating at all. Now where those days passed so quickly these days here seem to drag endlessly. Even the more so as there is so little to do. I could be organising my immigration. So many people to call and letters to write but nothing which really captivates my attention.
Maybe you find a way OUT. I hope you do.

I cannot presently see myself visiting anyone. But I am arranging for visitors on Saturday.

Probably the second best thing to do then. Monotony is best battled through others - which way you invite them into your life is probably not so terribly essential as long as the contact is physically there and not just via phone or email. Good luck!

Well, it is good to have some idea of why it is suddenly below 32 and dropping this morning. Brrr. The sudden wind smashed a lamp in my garage today and it scared the hell out of me.

I am glad of that.

Want to talk about it?

Since it sounds like taking a real, planned vacation is out of the question, why not write about those things? And I don’t (just) mean as a form of therapy. Novels are long; chances are you’ll be able to work them in. If not, they may serve as fodder for short stories.

You are, of course, more than welcome to bounce anything you’d like off of me. I’m usually pretty good at helping others flesh out their visions. In a way, it’s what I do for a living. But in this case, it would be diverting and fun. What could it hurt?

I just read "Untitled 34". Art, storytelling, wolves, consumption, ... the new flesh? Sounds like you are building one hell of a vector parameter for The Wolf Who Cried Girl. I hope my heart (or its transplant) holds out long enough to read it.
