A hard rain, here in Providence, as Hanna bears down on us. I don't really expect we'll lose power or anything of that sort. But we do have a tropical storm warning, a flash flood advisory, and so forth. Anyway, I thought I'd post some photos from our trip down to Beavertail on Thursday:

The "fairy trail" leading to the rocks and the shore (view to the north).

Lions Head Chasm, into which I almost fell. View to the northeast. Note the fisherman (upper, center) for scale. Exposed in the cross-section are interstratified beds of the Cambro-Ordovician Fort Burnside and Jamestown formations.

An Upland Sandpiper (Bartamia longicauda).

View along the chasm, back to the west. The tide was rising.

View from inside the chasm, near its opening to the sea, looking towards the northwest. Note the high-tide line marked by seaweed.

Lichen growing among veins of calcite.

More lichen.

View back to the south, towards Beavertail Point and the lighthouse, just before dark.

Is there any prospect that these pictures will be published somewhere? I would love to be able to have prints of some of them.

No plans. I suspect the resolution is too low, anyway.

No, but it fizzes when you drop acid on it!

Yeah, not salty, but because calcite is a polymorph of calcium carbonate, dissolving it in acids releases C02. Hence the fizz.

I am relieved you two are not out on the rocks today. Beautiful area, but looks slippery.

I used to Ha-Ha manage a photo lab in Portsmouth NH. and just want to say those are really good pictures- better than most I saw,and I saw some weird shit. Especially if they were taken while falling into a chasm. What kinda glass\camera was that? it must have alota megapickles.
Also wasn't farcape a movie or a show at one point, and if so did you get to act in it? I just saw your bad-ass character and was duely impressed. It looks like it may have been fun.

I am glad you did not fall into Lion's Head Chasm; it's lovely.

Here it's just tropically humid, raining on and off. We have yet to see anything resembling high winds.

It's amazing to think that that chasm was carved out by water and wind. Awesome pictures!

just wanted to apologize for my earlier interrogation. It has recently dawned upon me that seeing as how you are my most favorite and talented fiction writer, you probubly have more important things to do than respond to my relatively pointless and self centered questions. (especially when I throw 5 or 6 at you)I shall try to limit my interogative enthusiasm in hopes that you actually might have some time left to continue writing the storys that generate it.
