* According to The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language (4th ed.), a meme is "A unit of cultural information, such as a cultural practice or idea, that is transmitted verbally or by repeated action from one mind to another." A questionnaire, however, is "A form containing a set of questions, especially one addressed to a statistically significant number of subjects as a way of gathering information for a survey." But I guess this is one of those web things, like writing mic when you actually mean mike...

(Yes, I read that far) How is the Children of Hurin, so far? It's my least favorite of the Middle Earth tales, but the review I read (over on Powells, I think) made it sound really excellent.

This may seem completely random, but I have been struck by it for the last few weeks now. There is a British comedy on PBS that airs here on Sunday nights called Waiting For God, about an old folks home and it's wild tenets. I swear that watching the curmudgeonly and hilariously sharp witted Diana on there shows me what you're going to be like at age sixty-something. If you've never seen it you should. I think you'd get a good chuckle or two out of it.

I haven't, but this puts me in mind of The Duplex Planet (http://www.duplexplanet.com/) (mentioned in Silk, by the way).

Okay, now I'll have to watch...

I've not heard of the Duplex Planet, but I shall check it out.
Here's a great article from the BBC on Waiting For God.

Definitely classic. I think it ended it's run sometime in the mid-nineties. Over here PBS plays all kinds of British t.v. shows. My roommate is hooked on many of them, Faulty Towers, As Time Goes By, Monarch of the Glen, etc. Waiting for God was the one that got me hooked. Diana is just a classic character.

I was about 10 when it ended. It's healthy growing up with such grouchy, misanthropic role models. Do you get One Foot in the Grave? Very much in the same mould. You must have seen Red Dwarf...

I've never seen One Foot in the Grave, I don't think we get that one here. We do get Keeping Up Appearances, which just may be the comically worst show I've ever seen. It's so campy that you can't not like it. I have seen Red Dwarf, but it's been ages. I always liked it.

One Foot in the Grave was pretty good. About this curmudgeonly old man and his long suffering wife/neighbours/friends etc.... Keeping... does tap into a particular vein of middle england - the pretensions, the aspirations. The type of person who votes Conservative...

Cool, I'm not the only psycho fantasy writer with a rampaging River crush (I'm intuiting that yours is also rampaging).

Who's Nymphadora Tonks?
