But. There is good news. Yesterday, my lit agent and I accepted a two-book deal with Roc. The first book will be Joey LaFaye (though perhaps under a different title); the second will be a sequel to Daughter of Hounds. I will write the first novel in 2007, and the second will be written sometime in 2008. So, my gratitude to all the people reading this who bought a copy of Daughter of Hounds, thereby keeping me in the game a while longer.
But first, I have to finish Sirenia Digest #17 and #18 and #19, and finish "The Ape's Wife" for the Subterranean Press anthology, and write The Dinosaurs of Mars, and a Dinosaurs of Mars-related short story (more details on this later on). Which means I hardly have time to breathe for the next three months. But that's just fine. Better too much work than not enough.
Speaking of Sirenia Digest #17, I wrote a mere 421 words yesterday. Too much distraction over the aforementioned Penguin deal. I shall do better today, I hope. Of course, and on the other hand, there was a time — up until partway through 2002 ( and Low Red Moon) — when my daily minimum wasn't 1,000 words, as it is now, but only 500.
There's not much else to be said about yesterday. We celebrated the book deal modestly, with a dinner of Indian take-out (beef vinda-aloo, chicken madras, veggie samosas, papadum, and nan). Afterwards, I signed the signature sheets for the hardback limited of Subterranean Magazine #6. I spent the rest of the evening reading. It was a quiet evening. No alarms and no surprises, please.
Postscript (3:26 p.m.): Wow. I just heard Patti Smith's cover of "Smells Like Teen Spirit." Wicked.

When purchasing your books, I am often aware that there is the possibility that having them purchased from one locale over another maybe more beneficial for you. E.g. buying a book from one's local Barnes and Noble or Border's may be more beneficial than ordering it from Amazon. (As in does the publisher count the books sold at chain bookstores over Amazon, etc.) Is this true? Do you have a preference, or do you want us just to buy your books?
And speaking of your books, thank you for writing them.

Date: 2007-04-18 09:51 pm (UTC)Ultimately, it really doesn't matter. My publisher looks at numbers from Amazon and bookstores and from everywhere else. All those places order books from the same distributor, and my publisher judges success based on sales and return rates. It's just as damaging if Amazon returns unsold books as it is if Barnes & Noble returns unsold books (and vice versa).
What I will say is that I do ask that people please buy copies new, not used, if at all possible. Buying used copies doesn't exactly hurt as much as it simply doesn't help. Amazon has worsened this situation by allowing "used" book dealers to sell "new" copies on Amazon. If you can't afford the book new, get it from the library, as that at least encourages your library to order more of my books in the future.

Also, if you feel like braving the Atlantic Station Ikea, they have a bin filled with tiny plush sea creatures, namely squid (and two others who aren't as important), for a quarter each.
