I just read this in [livejournal.com profile] docbrite's LJ, and it seemed one of the oddest memes I've seen. I'm not sure I can articulate just why. Perhaps I question the author's definition of the word "spoiled," though that definition is only stated implicitly. Many of the criteria seem damned silly, arbitrary, or peculiarly subjective. And non-needed? As in, non-essential? Anyway, yeah, behind the frelling cut, yo:

Do you have:
(X) your own cell phone
( ) a tv in your bedroom
(X) an iPod
( ) a photo printer
( ) your own phone line

( ) TiVo or a generic digital video recorder
(X) high-speed internet access (aka not dialup)
( ) a surround sound system in bedroom
( ) dvd player in bedroom
( ) at least a hundred DVDs
(X) a childfree bathroom (er...never mind)
(X) your own in-house office
( ) a pool
( ) a guest house
( ) a game room
(X) a queen-size bed (there are two of us)
( ) a stocked bar
(X) a working dishwasher
( ) an icemaker
( ) a working washer and dryer
( ) at least ten things from a designer store
( ) expensive sunglasses
(X) framed authentic art
( ) Egyptian cotton sheets or towels
( ) a multi-speed bike
( ) a gym membership
( ) large exercise equipment at home
( ) your own set of golf clubs
( ) a pool table
( ) a tennis court
(X) local access to a lake, large pond, or the sea (this one's just dumb)
( ) your own pair of skis
( ) enough camping gear for a weekend trip in an isolated area
( ) a boat
( ) a jet ski
( ) a neighborhood committee membership
( ) a beach house or a vacation house/cabin
( ) wealthy family members
( ) two or more family cars
(X) a walk-in closet or pantry (pantry)
(X) a yard
( ) a hammock
( ) a personal trainer
(X) good credit
( ) expensive jewelry

( ) a horse
( ) a trust fund (either for you or created by you)
( ) private medical insurance
( ) a college degree, but no student loans

Do you:
( ) shop for non-needed items for yourself (like clothes, jewelry, electronics) at least once a week
( ) do your regular grocery shopping at high-end or specialty stores
( ) pay someone else to clean your house, do dishes, or launder your clothes (not counting dry-cleaning)
( ) go on weekend mini-vacations
( ) send dinners back with every flaw
( ) wear perfume or cologne
( ) regularly get your hair styled or nails done in a salon

(X) traveled out of the country
(X) met a celebrity
( ) been to the Caribbean
(X) been to Europe
( ) been to Hawaii
(X) been to New York
( ) eaten at the Space Needle in Seattle
( ) been to the Mall of America
( ) been to the Eiffel Tower in Paris
( ) been on the Statue of Liberty in New York
(X) moved more than three times because you wanted to
(X) dined with local political figures
(X) been to both the Atlantic coast and the Pacific coast (in any country)

Wow. Only 23. No wonder I'm such an ass. Oh, my comments are in italics.

That's what I thought. But I hate malls. I try not to even got to malls here in Atlanta. I'd rather eat ground glass than visit the Mall of America/

I am not sure where the Mall of America is. I agree, the survey is dumb. I live alone, therefor my bathroom is child free. I live in San Francisco, ergo access to the beach, tho I almost never fo there.

Framed art? Most of my family and friends paint. A yard? A pantry? Almost every old house in SF has those.

I don't understand why haveing most of that stuff makes you spoiled. I did the test and have a lowish score too.

Fegh

I know it's someplace cold.

I've been to the Mall of America. It was during a cross-country trip. We (my then-partner and I) were curious. I remember seeing The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert there, and eating at the Hard Rock Cafe there, and not actually doing much shopping there — just sort of faffing about looking.

By the by, the highlights of said trip were Graceland (intriguing even if one isn't an Elvis fan, which we weren't); pilgrimages to the grave of James Dean (my ex-partner's favorite movie star) and the hometown of James Stewart (my favorite); seeing Ed Wood in an odd, out-of-the-way Oklahoma theater and Pulp Fiction in a packed Florida theater whose audience was perfectly and intelligently alive to everything Tarantino was up to; a tour through Fallingwater; and, best of all, Korczak Ziolkowski's Crazy Horse Memorial, which must be seen once by every American before they die.

When you are right, you are very, very right. I went there late July '94. I bought a tiny, blasted chunk of the mountain and took pictures. Sometimes you just have to do the tourist-y things like that.

It is a stupid meme. I only filled it out in order to help my friends page get past whatever post caused it to overrun the margins of my screen.

You do have your own phone line, don't you? I've called it. That bit in particular makes me think the meme was written by a teenager, or possibly someone young enough to have four or five roommates.

I was confused by this question. I mean, we have a single landline (the one you've talked to me on). But it's the only landline in the house. It's the general, all-purpose, not-the-cellphone phone line. I pay the bill. Does that make it my own? I think of it as mine and Spooky's.

That bit in particular makes me think the meme was written by a teenager, or possibly someone young enough to have four or five roommates.

Agreed. But given that the mean age on LJ users is only 18, I suspect most of these inane memes are created by teens.

I would say that qualifies as your own phone line, but who knows what these krazy k1ddz mean by anything.

I think they mean, do you live in a waterfront property. I didn't even
reach 20 but I'm a bit spoiled.

Hardly anyone in the UK doesn't have one, I suppose because of the small size of the country and the proximity of Europe. I take it for granted... but I see your point.

I'm not sure how much of this can really count as being spoiled if it is something for which you work and finance from your own labors, except on a global scale at which point the fact that we are not currently toiling in a field in constant fear of starvation, assuming we're not gunned down by some militia or other makes us recklessly spoiled.

eh?

The eh being an expression of indifferent near confusion more than a solicitation for a response.
