Just a quick update to say that we've begun the second "choose your own letter" Frog Toes and Tentacles auction. The first was so successful, we figured it was better to go this route again, rtaher than putting a particular letter up for auction. The letter L is no longer available, but the auction page lists those letters which are. You also get a copy of the chapbook, False Starts. And, of course, the "cozy" with which to keep your book snug.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] robyn_ma for pointing me towards the cover of this week's issue of Time magazine. I do not take Time, nor do I usually read it, but I am impressed by this cover. The photograph seems very apt:

The world can burn up or freeze solid for all I care....I'll be happily living it up in some VR scape made to resemble Victorian Paris, only with awesome steampowered ROBOTS and mutant poets. Look for me come 2030 at the address www3002912.rue-d-auseil.pegritz.com!

We're given a beautiful, intricate, downright facsinating planet, and look what we do to it. Now we are facing the consequences. And it isn't pretty.

I was an english/geology major for awhile, til I had to withdraw from school after the storm. You made a very apt post shortly after the hurricane, about one day having to face the reality of even more catastrophic natural disasters, the reality of a 9.0 earthquake.

Moya, where are you? Get me the frell off this rock. So long, and thanks for the sashimi.

That is an incredible photo image (though my guess is that it's doctored? if not, I'm going to cry).

The photo's probably real -- polar bears tend to live on the edge of the ice pack for access to seals so that photo is evocative but not necessarily global warming related, but polar bears are in real trouble (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/521451.stm) due to global warming.

Thanks for the link. I did fortunately remember that polar bears can swim, so I'm not envisioning him drowning as the ice below him melts anymore.

However, it's still a sad photo, and an even sadder situation.

actually, as the ice packs recede, polar bears are frequently drowning because its further from the ice to the mainland than they expect. there have been a variety of news stories covering this in the last few months.

I'm pretty sure it's not doctored. Polar bears sometimes wander out onto melting pack ice. But I think it's meant more as a metaphor, that the polar bear, like all other artic and antarctic wildlife, and, by extension, all life on Earth, finds itself with increasingly less space as environments continue to degrade (and the rate of degradation accelerates).

I think you're exactly right, and it's rather well done. I've recently developed this newfound fasincation with photojournalism in the past month or so, and images like this one are the reasons why. Thanks again
