Addendum 1: Correction

As anyone who's been trying to learn more about conditions in New Orleans knows, the information presently coming out of the city is patchy and sometimes confusing and contradictory. This morning I said that New Orleans was under martial law, which is what MSNBC was reporting at the time. I heard it said repeatedly on television before I posted it here. But now it seems that only Jackson Parish is currently under martial law, not the entire city. I have no wish to add to the confusion.

I still have not ben able to reach my mother in Birmingham.

I've been watching a local News station in New Orleans. They have pictures, seem to be doing well with credible information, and have been covering the press conferences that have been happening.

Um, hi. I wanted to let you know that I have been able to reach people in Birmingham via cellular of an out-of-state visitor and it seems one side of Red Mountain has power and the other doesn't. Leeds, Ensley, Hoover and out by the Summit where the superwealthy houses are have no power and telephone. Irondale and Mountain Brook do.

So far, I've received no word of any major damage in Birmingham apart from the power outages. There are scattered outages well into North Alabama, including Huntsville.

I'm really glad you're all right. So far it seems no one I know has been hurt, but this thing's been on my mind constantly the past couple of days, even as I'm driving around under windless, cloudless skies here. I can't get Tom Waits' "I Wish I Was in New Orleans" out of my head.
