So...I was wondering...

If I happened to have a publisher who was interested in me producing a book of short erotic fiction, would anyone actually buy such a thing?

[Poll #431898]

Comments welcome.

I'd be interested in any book of short fiction you did, altho an erotic one would be a nice piquant twist.

No. I promise, it's not.

Although that was v v funny.

I thought so.

Yes! Yes! Oh please, and even if you write it, with no pulisher, I want it, print it out and I will buy it!

There is a small set of artists who have earned my absolute loyalty, whose work has so consistently impressed me that I'm willing to get on their bus and be taken wherever they choose to go. You are on that list. Erotica, poetry, science fiction, murder mysteries, economic theory... I can't imagine not buying your work, whatever genre or form you may choose to work in.

That said, I suppose I should also add that if you were to produce such a book it would be the first of it's kind I had ever owned. Or read. The world of sexuality is one from which I feel very far removed, and I suspect I would relate differently to erotic fiction than most of your readers. So part of my "yes" vote is because I'm now wondering what my reactions would be.

Yup. That's what I meant to say, only it didn't come out all classy like this.

i would also be inclined to say such things, and as well, not necessarily in such classy wording. mine would be more inconcise rambling. hell, is inconcise a word? i cannot remember. meh.

writers who can write good shit no matter the genre should always have their works gobbled up. and as such, i would do the same ^ ^

This poll is certainly bringing out an interesting new breed of icons so far.

Hey, you could do it! A lot of "Silk" struck me as particularly erotic, as did bits in "Threshold".

[identity profile] orangeflckrgrin.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Having been recently exposed to the wonderful world of Anais Nin's erotica, I must confess a blooming interest in the genre. And seeing as how you're my absolute favorite author, of course I'd pay big money to see it from you!

[identity profile] borggrrl.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Aside from the fact that I'm enamored with the way that you string words together, I suspect a collection of erotic stories written by you would probably stand more than half a chance of actually being good erotica.

[identity profile] wishlish.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
Oh hell yeah.

[identity profile] robyn-ma.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Waaaait a minute. You say 'me producing,' and the poll question says 'If wrote a book of erotica,' and the word 'I' is missing. Nowhere in here do you actually say, 'I, Caitlín R. Kiernan, am considering writing an erotic book in which all the words are mine and written by me, Caitlín R. Kiernan.'

It could be that you're actually talking about 'producing' in the sense of appearing at a convention, taking someone else's erotic book out of your backpack with a flourish, and saying 'Voila! I now produce...an erotic book,' thereby leaving your lust-glazed fanbase feeling punk'd.

I'm all skeptical now. I'll believe it when I see a chapbook called Throbbings: Absinthe Sweat and Eyeliner on the Nipples by Caitlín R. 'Sizzly Pants' Kiernan.

Mmmm-hmm.

jesus robyn, down girl! (she is so enthusiastic)

[identity profile] forgottenbelief.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 02:09 am (UTC)(link)
Absolutely. There is definately not enough GOOD erotic fiction produced. Or at least, produced and appearing on bookstore shelf. Being that I introduce myself to new authors mostly through browsing, this becomes a big problem for me.

So, in addition to being more than happy to see erotic fiction with your name on it, if you have any recommendations for existing erotic fiction, I'd happily take it.

[identity profile] loupgarouone.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
Wow! Poetry, erotica...

I hope you'll include some female/female subjugation scenes and piss those easily offended feminists. I wish they did something else with their fingers than pointing them at other females. Fingers, when used with imagination and dexterity, are incredibly erotic. Keyword: friction.

[identity profile] felisdemens.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
I like your work, I like erotica - how could I lose?

minor additions

Yes. With soft focus black and white photography from Ms. Ptacek, please.

Yes. Of course. Forgive me, thryn. Party faux pas.

The world can never get enough erotica. So long as it isn't cloying, body-worship trash.

[identity profile] shopmonkey.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 06:50 am (UTC)(link)
There wasn't an option for "Hell yes!"

So I went with "Yes"
Such an appropriate poll to answer as I stand here at the sex shop working the good work.

I'd buy one. With your talent for complex characters and tactile descriptions, such a thing would probably be especially good.

[identity profile] shinysayyadina.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 02:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd be thrilled. I love good erotica and feel that your work would be phenomenal, since your descriptions are so fabulous and your imagination works in mysterious and amazing ways.

Especially given characters like Umachandra or your comments on writing Chapter 2 of Daughter of Hounds, I would be very interested to see what Caitlín Erotica looks like.

Okay, then I definitely want to see a book of this stuff.

Has there been an offer made, or is this still in the contemplation stage?

[identity profile] oneirophrenia.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 07:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'd read that--definitely. But there's better be tentacles and mutants!

But of course!

[identity profile] sleepycyan.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Tentacles and mutants is definitely a plus.

[identity profile] fornikate.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of your work is already erotic. I don't know if I could handle the full monty. But I'd buy it anyway!

[identity profile] mistressmousey.livejournal.com 2005-02-06 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I fully admit that I'm one of the 'no's above, BUT that is entirely because I'm not really into reading erotica myself. If the question was "Should I write a book of erotica?" then I'd say you should go for it if that's what you want to do. I like you're writing style and I think it would work well with erotica - in other words, I think you could do it well. Heck, I'd recommend it on the basis of your other works alone - and I certainly wouldn't say that about just anyone.

[identity profile] jack-yoniga.livejournal.com 2005-02-07 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
My 'no' vote on this merely stems from the fact that I'm not a big erotica fan, by any author, so it's not that I wouldn't buy an erotica collection of yours, specifically, but that I don't buy them in general.

[identity profile] sfmarty.livejournal.com 2005-02-08 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
No for a couple of reasons. 1. Erotica doesn't turn me on. 2. I am trying to limit my book buying to those books I will want to read over and over again.
