If I was to compare this music to anything, which is a bad habit, then The National seem to come across as Echo and the Bunnymen meet Big Country by way of R.E.M. - and it is meant as a compliment, however lopsided.
I love The National and I too was late to the party. I keep singing the chorus from "Conversation 16" over and over: "Because I AM EVIL." A bonus is that the video has Kirsten Schaal AND John Slattery. They're coming to Montreal in December with Neko Case, which is a bill of full of fantastic, but the ticket prices will keep this poor baker at home.
I thought you might like to know about this: http://www.ea.com/the-secret-world
The Secret World is a massively multiplayer online game set in our own, modern-day world.
Imagine if every myth, conspiracy theory and urban legend was true. Imagine a world where vampires hunt for mortal blood in dingy London nightclubs, where werewolves lurk in the sewers beneath Seoul, and where the undead prey on the living in the shadows of New York City. This is the premise for The Secret World, Funcom's upcoming massively multiplayer online game set in the modern-day real world.
What really intrigues me, beyond the use of real locations and so on, is the lack of levels and classes. That would tend to suggest both a strong foundation for role-play and a lack of interest for the grinding-focused players.
I know you have Rift and 2L and a certain discontent about spending too much time in games. Thought this might be of interest though. Heck, it's got me slavering for next April.
I used to live just a few miles away from Aztec Camera, and I can definitely see where you get The Chameleons from. Two of my favourite ever tracks are 'Tears' and 'Swamp Thing' - wonderful and underrated band.
The National
Re: The National
I was hearing a little Aztec Camera, as well. And maybe The Chameleons. I'd love to spy their record collections...
