I was first introduced to the term “tranny” with the meaning of “extra in the Rocky Horror Picture Show”, and still do a mental double-take whenever I see it in other contexts. I then tend to only see it used as an affectionate reclaimed term— I wasn’t even aware it was ever pejorative! I suppose this comes of growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area...
