I think the death of the meme on LJ is because people who don't have enough to say to actually write a blog post can do it a lot easier by posting "I am so angry with my sister right now" on facebook and being done with it.
I wonder if the more casual forms of blogging have just boiled off to twitter, people are still blogging, but I suspect the signal to noise ratio has gotten better. were i an academic, i'd sic a grad student on that.
