I can't imagine how irksome it must be to hear from readers who are complaining (essentially) about what information they were or were not given in a story. There are loads of stories out there that explain things like why there are no men, or why a world is barren and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. It can be clumsy and downright ham-fisted... I mean, just look at all the horrible stuff about "midiclorians" in episode one of Star Wars. Why oh why did Lucas feel the need to explain the force?

In writing, and in life, I say; go with your instincts, go with what pleases you. To hell with what people may be expecting or wanting from you or your work. Your art should be fun for you, should feed your soul and yay if other people like it and want to pay you for it... but attempting to make your art please others, except on rare and special occasion, sounds just awful to me.
