Addendum: An Inconvenient Truth

It is difficult to get a man to understand something when his salary depends upon his not understanding it. — Upton Sinclair

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] moschus for reminding me of An Inconvenient Truth, which I've been meaning to mention, but have forgotten (along with lots of other things) in the mad rush of editing these last three weeks. Anyway, yes, the website's here, and I urge you to watch the trailer and add your name to the list of people pledging to see the film. It will be screening here in Atlanta on June 9th at the Tara, and I for one will be there. In my wildest dreams, I just begin to hope that the world is finally waking up, here at the eleventh hour, when even now it may be too late to turn the tide of global warming. It's time to listen to the scientists and educate yourselves and understand the science and take the fate of the planet — or at least this version of the planet, the one amenable to human life — out of the hands of politicians and corporations. I'm not an optimist, and I'm not even sure than humanity deserves another chance, but I'd still rather see mankind fighting a losing battle, if it's the right losing battle, than continuing to ignore what's happening.

Meanwhile, today is managing to be stupendously unproductive.

I saw a trailer for An Inconvenient Truth last week when I saw Hard Candy (the main character of which, by the way, sort of reminded me of a grouchy version of Dancy). I'm really liking Al Gore these days. I'm kind of annoyed by the fact that everyone seems to be speculating about 2008 presidential candidates, but I'd like it if he ran again.

My husband just put up a post about this on Morons.org. Pretty much sums up the reason you should see the film even if you aren't convinced you need to. (You'll have to click the "check this out..." link to read the original - and outright SCARY - article that prompted his post... or click here if for some reason that link is busted.)

Okay. That's it. I think I'm ready to join the Immaculate Order of the Falling Sky, now. Only, can I ask for plenty of advance warning, so that there's time to build the necessary underground shelters (or "love domes")? Because I'd be pretty damn happy if all these willfully ignorant bastards got pulverized while waiting for their Judeo-Christian Deity to reach down and, you know, alter the course of the planet at the last minute to Save them. "We call it life..." Sure, if you're a plant.

Oh crap. It's not recklessly irresponsible and morally corrupt humans responsible for global warming...it's the Triffids! Well, I suppose the decaying remains of a civilization of 6.0 billion would make some awful tasty fertilizer...
