This from washingtonpost.com:

New federal guidelines [from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] ask all females capable of conceiving a baby to treat themselves -- and to be treated by the health care system -- as pre-pregnant, regardless of whether they plan to get pregnant anytime soon.

Among other things, this means all women between first menstrual period and menopause should take folic acid supplements, refrain from smoking, maintain a healthy weight and keep chronic conditions such as asthma and diabetes under control.

Anyone remember The Handmaid's Tale? May I now be afraid of the Xtian Dominionists running this country without being thought an alarmist? Please? Before these "guidelines" become The Law or I'm convicted of gender treachery or heresy or something of the sort? While women are still, in theory, allowed to think of themselves as something more than walking uteruses? Anyway, here's the rest of the story: Forever Pregnant: Guidelines Treat Nearly All Women as Pre-Pregnant. If you'd like to read through the CDC document in question, click here to download a PDF.

Not much to be said about yesterday. My unfortuante and simplistic reductionist tendency towards typology has, recently, led me to categorize days based upon how much or how little or what sort of work I get done. There are days off (rarely). Those days receive an O. There are days which earn an X. Those are days when I actually write. There are days which only earn a W, which is to say I've worked, but not actually written. There are days which get an R or an E, which is to say, respectively, that I read or edited, but did not actually write. And then there are the worst days of all, the lost days, which earn an LD. On these days I'm not off, but I don't manage to get any sort of work done, either. Yesterday earned an LD. I marked it as such on the Gorey calendar in the kitchen and on my day planner. It's my first LD is more than three weeks. Generally, LDs follow from some sort of inconvenient emotional turmoil. Today needs to earn an X, because Sirenia Digest #6 isn't going to write itself.

Sophie had a rough day yesterday, too. Her blood sugar was very high all day, up to 550 at one point. She seems to be doing better today.

Spooky took me for lunch at The Vortex. I bought a new pair of shoes at Abbadabbas at L5P (the first new shoes I've bought in over a year). And really, there's nothing more worth mentioning.

Here's the link for An Inconvenient Truth again. As I said yesterday, I urge you to watch the trailer and pledge to see the film. The time when humanity can pretend that global warming and rising sea-levels are science fiction and/or liberal histrionics meant to harm industry and Big Oil has long passed. And I fucking hate that the apathy, political climate, and consumer culture in this country has made it so hard for me to write a sentence like that without feeling a bit foolish or fearing that some cynical asshole will label me a "moonbat"...
