pain

So...because I owe David an explanation...I've had a headache for almost forty-eight hours. I don't like using the "m" word in relation to headaches, the same way I don't like using the "wb" word in relation to writing, but, yeah, that's what this is. The "m" word. Wednesday it was merely bad. Yesterday it turned truly nasty on me. It's still here, digging through my right eye into my brain, or out of my brain through my right eye. Frell me if I can tell the difference. Anyway, that's why I can't be counted on to accurately report who won the Nicky Hilton (yuck) challenge on Project Runway this week, even when I know. Anyway, let's talk about something else.

I am very glad to say that I wrote 0 words yesterday. Okay. That's a lie. I did two long blog entries and an entry in my pen-and-paper journal, and an e-mail to my agent and another one to my editor, and one to Peter Straub and another to Steve Jones...oh, and one to Jada...but it is true that I wrote 0 words of fiction yesterday. That'll just have to do.

Though I'd meant to read yesterday, I mostly did other things, instead. Spooky lured me out of the apartment to go see the dinosaur on Sinclair Avenue. I thought she was making it up, just to make me get out of the apartment. But, no, there is, indeed, a dinosaur on Sinclair Avenue. I'll post photos tomorrow, since today I'm posting more photos from the aquarium, as per yesterday's promise. Anyway, after the dinosaur we walked down to the North Highland Pub, where I seriously considered having a couple or three pints...but wiser heads prevailed. Which means Spooky said no. On the way home, we saw a plumbing truck, and the company's name was DinoSewer, which was a nice drop of coincidence, since we'd just visited the dinosaur on Sinclair Avenue. It was a brisk walk, as the weather was much cooler than on Wednesday, and it made my ears ache and my fingers numb, but it was nice, all the same. We discovered from a flier on a telephone pole that Sugar, the white cat who lives on the street in back of Junkman's Daughter at L5P and whom Spooky knows, is missing. I think fairies are behind it. We talked about the architecture of sidewalks. It was all very nice (well, except for the fairies having catnapped Sugar). Back home, we caught the last two eps of the first half of Season Two of Battlestar Galactica, which means we're now ready for the new ep tonight. After dinner, we watched Miyazaki's Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke on TCM. They're showing Hayao Miyazaki films every Thursday night in January. I truly adore Princess Mononoke, and Spooky had never seen Spirited Away. And that was my second day off. Neither sucked, which is unusual, as my days off are usually disasters.

Today, we must read all the way through "Bainbridge," start to finish, and then I'll make whatever edits need making. And frell, I still haven't sent it off to Ted Naifeh. So, yeah, I'll be doing that as well. Yesterday, when I told my agent it had gone to almost 16K words, she said "wow." Wow, indeed. After the edits, it may be a little longer still.

Okay. Now for more aquarium pictures (behind the cut):

Vicky wanted to see the Japanese spider crabs...

It was a splendid and unearthly scene.

And there were the belugas, with whom I fell in love.

And a "sky" filled with cow-nosed rays.

Well that explains that. I had a pain in my left eye the other day and I swear I thought my eyeball was going to pop out and shoot across the room. I hope yours goes away soon.

What a ridiculous suggestion.

I think everybody knows that cats aren't -napped by fairies...they go on safari with fairies. A six-day, seven-night adventure-filled expedition including stalking the hills and glens of the local mythological paradise in search of lethargic, toothless rats (stuffed with crab meat), stunted, flightless birds (sauteed in cheese), and (when they are in season and particularly irresistable) fairies.

Okay. Now for more aquarium pictures

Great pictures. I'd make comparisons about my local aquarium, but since I usually have some sort of phobic attack when confronted with large roaming predators of the sea (even behind six inches of glass) I must admit I haven't been in some time. Hearteningly, those spider crabs look a lot better in their tank than they do on my sushi plate.

Speaking of which, sushi does distract one from the M-word.

Ah, but your love for me was so fleeting! ;)

I thought you might enjoy seeing a couple of my Monterey photos in here.

I'm happy about that. They're showing a couple of movies I haven't seen, some of which weren't actually directed by Miyazaki, merely produced by Studio Ghibli.

My favourite Miyazaki movie, Porco Rosso, is on the 19th. I recommend it.

So what was it you were going to say about Brokeback Mountain?

Thanks for posting the Japanese spider crab images... they are so creepy. How big were they? I remember the Liverpool one being over a meter tall, but it is possible that I exagerrated it in my young mind. The thought of one of those scuttling up behind me in dark waters fills me with terror.

I hope your headache eases soon.

thats interesting

I suffer from those M-word things too. My doctor put me on a drug called Zomig, where you only take a pill when you have an "m" and it clears it right up. It literally changed my life, I used to have to stick out days of horrible pain now I don't. Just thought I'd pass that along, in case yours ever cross the line from painful but bearable to less so.

OOoh, I like your rainbow icons. Much more striking than mine.

I'm very sorry to hear about the m-word; the only thing that ever makes a dent in mine is to fill the tub with extremely hot water, add rosemary oil, submerge myself with my face barely out of the water, and stay that way for thirty minutes or more.

I meant to comment on your post about the sad decline of the aquarium: if you ever, EVER get the chance, go to Osaka and spend an entire day at their aquarium. They have tanks bigger than some office towers I've seen. Tanks big enough for a sun whale, and for a school of whale sharks. It was one of the most awe-inspiring places I've ever been.

Thanks for the heads up... even if I did miss this past Thursday. TiVo is now ready for the remaining movies. I love TCM, my TiVo usually proves it. :}

I am so looking forward to the Aquarium of the Americas being fully repaired and restocked this summer. It was actually a decent aquarium, and there was no huge food court!

When I first checked this thing, I, apparently, was love. Now it seems to be you. That freaked me out, just slightly. :)

Feel better, soon
