I'm also saddened by the decline in LiveJournal users that I'm seeing. Instead of getting details about what's going on in people's lives (some of who I consider close friends), I now get little snippets that tell me absolutely nothing. I've gone on about it at great length in my own LiveJournal. But it's easier to type 140 characters for most people than something a bit longer.

Personally, I have trouble putting details down into 140 characters. My mind refuses to work like that. I think in paragraphs and not abbreviated sentences.
