Regarding "quick reads" and grocery store type books - When I read, I get pretty clear pictures of characters and places in my head. The more engrossing and fleshed-out the novel, the clearer and more vivid the mental pictures - the more real the world and the people. So the couple of times that I've read one of these quick reads (generally by accident, or out of desperation when there's nothing else), all of the characters in my head look and move like paper dolls. Seriously. They run around like gingerbread men in an Easter grass world. It's the oddest thing :0P And pretty unsatisfying.
