Actually, protagonists aside or no, I've found such searching can be A) a good way to find my first steps into unexplored aspects of myself, sometimes cluing me to how far I'm prepared to explore in waking life, and B) an entry-point into understanding and dealing with types of people I'd never otherwise be able to comprehend or endure, in life or on the page.
That, or you stumble onto shit that's just plain wrong, like what you've described.
