but you also ought to know that, in the end, the film falls apart, and the conclusion, which literally opens a door into a blackness so profound it might have been genius, is squandered on cheesy images of pretend occultism and mad scientists.

I am more disappointed in films that fumble the finale than films that have been scattershot throughout; you think they'll pull off something brilliant, so you relax and then the stupid blood-dripping monster explodes out of the air ducts, or the attic, or the internet. I can just never figure out why no one stops the writers/directors when that happens before they commit it irrevocably to film.
