Because I wholly concur, there was so much which was genuinely creepifying without having to be so obvious about certain tropes (given the premise uses one which is so engrained as be to nearly archetypal, in my estimation).

They could have explored just one aspect of the experience - being lost in a place where being lost shouldn't have been possible - and made a genuinely horrifying film from that alone.

Walking for miles in a tunnel that doesn't extend for miles. The sun never rising. Stairways that lead nowhere. And so forth. This is fear. Not dozens of arms grasping from walls.
