There's cold air on the way, but this early afternoon it's 74F and sunny, and my office window is open.

The comments from yesterday's post were a little overwhelming, and I didn't reply to all the ones I ought to have replied to, I know. The kind words are appreciated, but I was left feeling as though I were fishing for compliments...or something. Which isn't at all what I was doing. Anyway, whatever. Thank you. I think my favorite comment came from [livejournal.com profile] catconley, who asked, "Does the tweeter also think that Stephen Hawking is a computer?" Brava.

Seeing there was no hope of working yesterday, I left the House, and we went to What Cheer (Wayland Square) and the Curious Mermaid (Wickenden Street), looking for the things that will be making up the Dancy box. The things we aren't making. Little religious tchotchkes, a black plastic dog, an old postcard. This started out as just something extra to offer with a lettered copy of Alabaster (letter X). But now it's grown into a piece of art in its own right. Spooky's cousin Ben is sending us the perfect cigar box from Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. It was a warm, drizzly day Outside, and I spent most of it sorting through postcards from the forties and fifties and sixties.

Jada sent us voodoo dolls for Halloween.

---

Mixed feelings about last night's episode of Glee. On the one hand, it was neat. The Rocky Horror Picture Show was a huge part of my life long ago. Somewhere there are photos of me as Magenta. Oh, here they are (thank you Spooky):

"The Time Warp"

"Touch-a Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me"

Anyway, I'm perplexed at the word "transsexual" having been replaced with "sensational." And they somehow managed to do the whole thing without cross-dressing, which is sort of like doing Doctor Zhivago without Russians. Maybe I'm not perplexed. Maybe I'm only disappointed. Oh, and saw the new Caprica, but I did so immediately after getting the news that "SyFy" has canceled the show, and that the final five episodes won't air until early 2011. May I call this SyFyail? The show was too smart, and too off-beat, and the money can be better spent making shitty movies and reality shows, I'm sure. Caprica will go down after only a single season.

Please have a look at the current eBay auctions. Thanks.

Sometimes, my heart's just not in an entry. Like now.

Perfect coinage and, if you don't mind, I will be taking that, now, to use far and wide. With attribution, of course.

3) Rocky Horror rocks always

I'd never watched Glee before, but I tuned in because it was Rocky Horror. I was perplexed by the choices they made. I couldn't figure out what changes were based on network restrictions and what was supposed to be part of the fiction, i.e. the changes they had to make because it was being performed in a high school. The whole thing was just...odd. Transvestite as a lyric is okay, but transexual isn't? Heavy petting is okay, but seat-wetting isn't? Something just felt off about the whole thing, and it certainly didn't convince me I should keep watching the show.

On an unrelated note, I absolutely love your work, and I can't wait for the 'Two Worlds' collection. Thank you for everything you've written.

Oh, and the thing that got me about the heavy petting and such being changed is that only one episode earlier, Santana talked about scissoring with Brittany.

THAT wasn't too risque, but those lyrics were?

I'm angry about Caprica. I heard my husband read the news out loud, just trying to digest it himself, and I could've sworn he said something about them putting effort into another BSG spin-off instead, and that just made me angrier. I want the full Caprica story before we move on.

It takes me back to high school french class and my teacher flipping past chapters of "Le Petit Prince" we "don't need to read because nothing happens". argh.

I'm hesitant to ask this, but is there any way we all can contribute to the project? I suppose it might diminish the "made by CRK and Spooky" value, but still. I think your readers have lots of junk which could be pressed into service of this object d'art. Is there a definite list of things you're looking for that you could post?

At this point, all we really need is a little New Testament, you know the tiny ones with a fake leather cover? And I think we can find one locally without too much fuss. I'm actually having something almost like fun making this. I sort of wish we didn't have to sell it. But, anyway, thanks.

I have a New Testament from the 1920s - approximately 2.75" wide by 4.25" high, the pages are edged in gold gilt, the cover is black fake leather. It looks like it's been through hell and back - the fake leather on the front cover has fallen off.

It's yours if you want it.

Oh Rocky. Austin held sway with one of the longest running shows, though I'm not sure if we still have that title. A friend of mine worked at the theater where it ran, and some other folks I knew were in the show. We got our school newspaper shut down for "obscenity" for writing an article about it and including a pretty damn tame picture of Columbia. Good times. (We sort of made a specialty of getting our paper shut down that year for one thing or another.)

I've never watched Glee, but reading this made me think, what the hell? You can't neuter (I'm not sure if that's the right word to use) Rocky Horror like that. I always wanted to be the Narrator, if only because I admired his taste in grey velvet. Or Riff Raff: I never had the knees to do Frank.

Tchotcke. That's a fabulous word (hands up, I had to look it up.)

I had no interest in the Glee Rocky Horror when I noticed they cast a girl in the role of Dr. Frankenfurter, which takes most of the shock out of how the character dresses (Dr. Frankenfurter is a transvestite, this girl is not). Didn't realize they replaced transsexual with sensational. It's less Rocky tribute and more Rocky exploitation, exploiting people's warm feelings of the movie while taking out the things that made it daring and interesting.

Exactly.

Also, to repeat a quote I thought just about said it: "They un-gayed the gayest musical that ever gayed." Sanitizing lyrics is one thing. Homophobia is another. You can't do Rocky Horror on FOX with a male Frank? Then how about you don't do it at all.

It's particularly odd because, for example, the Lady Gaga episode had massive cross-dressing, and the character of Curt often turns gender-bending fashion fabulousness up to 11. Weirdness.

I couldn't agree more. I hate it when they cast women to play men who cross-dress, what is the point of that? Is it really so shocking? I mean, maybe growing up in the "happy valley" warped my fragile little mind, but cross dressing is nothing to be offended by. How much more superficial can you get than CLOTHES?

I never forgave them for canceling Farscape in favor of crap like Ghost Hunters and "documentaries" about fairies. I saw one episode of Caprica and knew it was doomed because it was well done. My apologies to fans of Ghost Hunters but for me, Farscape was the best SF show ever. Never loose heart about your blogging. I visit here to calm down when the Tea Party or some other true horror tale gets to me.

Can't wait to see the Dancy box. I have two of the three Silent In Reds and the anticipation is nice to savor.

I was going to watch the Rocky Horror episode of Glee, but I don't really see the point now. I've seem little bits of the series, but there's something seriously wrong when they chop and change anything that SOMEBODY might take offence at. I mean, shit on a brick, I've sat and watched Rocky with my children and wouldn't think twice of watching it with the grandchildren. They can shove their 'sensational' into whatever bodily orifice they wish. Rocky is fun, it has characters to love and it has Tim Curry. What more can you really want?

Well, more episodes of Firefly might have been nice, but noooooo.

Glee's Rocky made me kind of sad. It was such a bummer of an episode - Rocky has always been so much fun - I was disappointed. They cut out the soul with the sex. And yes, the lyrical changes were pretty random.... the "sensational" really threw me for a loop.

Wait, they canceled Caprica? Like you said, the funding was needed to produce another 50 MegaBigAssedTuna vs. Dragonsauraus movies. Fuck.

Did you hear last night “South Park” referenced Cthulhu? BP drilled so far down they ripped into the multiverse or something along those lines. We were chatting while casually watching until I saw the Cthulhu caption on the screen. I am a little foggy on the story line.

BP actually had the bright idea of drilling on the moon to offset the damage done by double-drilling. The moon drilling summoned Cthulhu. I, as the kids say, laughed out loud.

My heart broke when I heard that Caprica got cancelled. I guess a show with some intelligence just isn't something SyFy is interested in actually following through with and developing. It seems, however, that fans on Facebook and Twitter, are throwing a fit, though, and good for them. But hey, at least we'll get more wrestling on SyFy, right?

I still cringe when I see it as SyFy (and still think of syphilis). But yes, it's all about wrestling, bad movies and bad reality t.v.

I think a show like Caprica would probably have done better on HBO or Showtime or a premium channel that would have let it grow. It's still a shame, though. SyFy had a chance to do something really well and unsurprisingly, they decided not to.
